Junior Seau, a 12-time Pro Bowl linebacker who played with the San Diego Chargers and the Miami Dolphins during a 16-year NFL career, will announce his retirement today.
Seau, a member of the NFL's all-decade team for the 1990s, will make the announcement at a news conference at Chargers Park this afternoon, the team said in a statement yesterday.
The 37-year-old Seau spent the last three seasons with Miami after being acquired from San Diego.
He was released by the Dolphins in March after missing 17 games the last two years because of injuries.
In spring 2003 the Chargers, feeling that Seau's best years were behind him, allowed his agent to shop for a trade. Seau then was sent to Miami.
Redskins. One series into its first preseason game, Washington's offense took a significant jolt.
Running back Clinton Portis partially dislocated his left shoulder last night during a 19-3 loss to the Cincinnati Bengals, giving the Redskins a major concern for the regular season.
Portis ran for a club-record 1,516 yards last season, when Washington made the playoffs as a wild-card team, and was counted on to steady an offense retooled by assistant coach Al Saunders in the off-season.
Portis opened the game with an 8-yard carry, then blocked for Mark Brunell's passes. He helped tackle cornerback Keiwan Ratliff on an interception return that ended Washington's first possession, then left the game to get his shoulder examined.
An MRI exam detected the injury, which involves the bone popping out of place temporarily in the shoulder socket. Standard treatment involves rest and strengthening exercises. There was no immediate indication as to how long Portis will be sidelined.
Without Portis, the running game will depend upon backup Ladell Betts, who ran for 338 yards last season and missed four games because of a knee injury.
Giants. The chances that Sinorice Moss will have an impact on the New York offense early this season are fading with each day the rookie receiver misses practice with a leg injury.
The second-round draft pick from Miami injured a quadriceps muscle on the second day of training camp and has missed the last two weeks of practice.
Giants coach Tom Coughlin seemed at a loss when asked about Moss' possible return.
"He has missed so much time, all these reps he could have been learning by experiencing, he has been learning vicariously as other people execute what he could have been doing," Coughlin said. "That's not necessarily the way to learn."
Tonight's game.Raiders receiver Randy Moss is set to return to Minnesota's Metrodome tonight for his first game there since being traded to Oakland before last season. "Hopefully he won't go too deep on us," Vikings defensive tackle Kevin Williams said. "But it will be good to see him."
The game also marks the head coaching debut for the Vikings' Brad Childress. The former Eagles offensive coordinator was hired in January to replace Mike Tice.
Browns. Cornerback Gary Baxter is the latest Cleveland Browns starter to be sidelined by injury, but the team is optimistic that he will be back for the regular-season opener Sept. 10 against New Orleans.
Baxter strained his left pectoral muscle on the first play from scrimmage in Thursday's preseason loss to the Eagles. No surgery is scheduled, and the recovery time is estimated at three to four weeks.
Baxter missed the last 10 games of 2005 after tearing his right pectoral muscle.
"It's not anything near last year's injury," Baxter said. "I'm positive of that."
Chargers. San Diego coach Marty Schottenheimer has high expectations for new quarterback Philip Rivers.
Rivers did not disappoint in his debut, throwing for 169 first-half yards and leading two early scoring drives in a 17-3 victory over Green Bay in Saturday's preseason opener for both teams.
"I thought he played excellent," Schottenheimer said. "He played pretty much like I expect him to."
Packers. Green Bay safety Marviel Underwood will miss the season after suffering torn ligaments in his right knee during Saturday's loss to the Chargers, ESPN.com reported. Underwood, 24, will be placed on injured reserve.
Panthers. Keyshawn Johnson, in his first game with Carolina, caught an 18-yard pass from Jake Delhomme on the first play from scrimmage, the beginning of a game-opening touchdown drive on the way to a 14-13 win over the Buffalo Bills on Saturday.
Raiders. Sources told ESPN.com that Oakland is not likely to trade unhappy wide receiver Jerry Porter this year. Porter has missed practice time in training camp because of a calf injury.
