--Coach Bill Callahan made special mention of the hustling play of rookie
defensive end Tyler Brayton after the Pittsburgh game.
"Late in the second half there was a big play made by (Steeler Antwaan
Randle El) and (Brayton) makes a play about 40 yards down the field,"
Callahan said. "It was very impressive. You could see his finish and his
effort. To make that play, to finish it the way he did, was phenomenal in my
opinion ... for a rookie defensive end."
Brayton shrugged off the compliment, saying, "It starts in the defensive
line room. One of our main goals is to go out and play hard, play the game
the way it's meant to be played.
"You can never give up on a play. These guys are too good. You never know
when the guy might drop the ball and you can go pick it up and recover a
fumble. I just think if you play hard and with a lot of effort, you can make
up for a lot of mistakes with hustle."
A transcription error by the Pittsburgh Steelers' public relations staff
created an embarrassing situation for Callahan. Following the game, Callahan
was responding to questions about whether punter Shane Lechler was trying to
direct his kicks away from Randle-El.
What Callahan said was "I don't know ... I'd have to talk to Bob."
By "Bob," he was referring to special teams coach Bob Casullo. However, the
transcription passed out to the media made it sound completely different.
It read, "I don't know ... I would have to talk to the boss."
The implication: he'd have to talk to Al Davis.
A rookie free agent, defensive end Akbar Gbaja-Biamila is the Raiders'
nominee for the NFL Man of the Year. Gbaja-Biamila, bother of Green Bay's
Kabeer Gbaja-Biamila, earned the distinction for his community involvement
with the youth of Oakland.
"I go to different schools and talk to the students, kids who grew up in
neighborhoods like myself (in Los Angeles) talking about life skills and
what it takes to make it out," he said.
Kick return specialists Alvis Whitted and John Stone have the two fastest
100 meter times in the Atlantic Coast Conference championship meet.
