INDIANAPOLIS -- On the verge of an upset thanks to a quarterback able to keep plays alive with his feet, the Raiders fell short when Terrelle Pryor made a mistake with his arm. His second interception of the day resulted in a 21-17 Indianapolis Colts victory Sunday before 65,412 fans at Lucas Oil Stadium.
Quarterback Andrew Luck ran 19 yards for a touchdown with 5:20 remaining to put the Colts in front, with the Raiders getting as far as the Indianapolis 8-yard line before a sack pushed the Raiders back to the 24-yard line.
Faced with third-and-goal from the 24, Pryor threw his second interception -- this one to Antoine Bethea -- and the Colts had escaped with a win in the regular-season opener for both teams.
Pryor, the unannounced starter by coach Dennis Allen, completed 19 of 27 passes for 217 yards with a 5-yard touchdown pass to Denarius Moore. Pryor also rushed for 112 yards on 13 carries, leaving no doubt as to who the starting quarterback is for the foreseeable future.
There were mistakes the Raiders will have to live with, but Pryor's ability to escape and create made for some clutch plays and put a heavy underdog in position for a for a win.
Oakland took a 21-17 lead with 11:09 to play after a Jason Hunter sack of Luck on fourth-and-1 set up the Raiders with a short field. Despite having a 30-yard touchdown pass to Darren McFadden overturned, Pryor came back to complete an 11-yard pass to Moore on third-and-10 and struck again from third down on the touchdown pass.
The Raiders outgained the Colts 372-274. Luck finished 18 of 23 with 174 yards and two touchdowns.
The Raiders got no points out of two possessions late in the first half in Indianapolis territory and trailed 14-7.
Taking over with 2:52 left after a 33-yard punt by Pat McAfee, a Pryor pass attempt to Marcel Reece fell incomplete on third-and-1 at the Oakland 47 with Marquette King punting into the end zone.
The Raiders got the ball back, forcing their first incomplete pass of the game from Luck, and a 19-yard Pryor to Mychal Rivera pass set up the Raiders at the 35-yard line.
Pryor lost three yards, threw incomplete to Denarius Moore, then hit Brice Butler for 8 yards to the 30-yard line to set up Janikowski for a 48-yard field goal attempt.
Janikowski missed the kick wide left after going the entire 2012 season without missing inside the 50-yard line.
