The Oakland Raiders have added four names to their 2012-2013 defense. Two of them are veterans that debuted as a member of the Silver & Black last season, in defensive end Andre Carter and cornerback Joselio Hanson. The news faces are also cornerback Mike Jenkins, who signed a one-year deal after five seasons with the Dallas Cowboys, and free safety Usama Young, who played under Dennis Allen as his secondary coach for three years in New Orleans.
The 28-year-old Jenkins is a former 1st round pick by the Cowboys in 2008 out of South Florida. After a breakout season in 2009, when he earned a selection to the Pro Bowl by recording 49 tackles, five interceptions and 19 pass deflections, Jenkins fell behind in the Dallas’ depth chart due to a series of injuries that slowed down his performances, which included a neck stinger and a dislocated right shoulder that required off-season surgery. Following three seasons with at least 12 games as a starter, Jenkins only started two contests in 2012, recording 14 tackles and three pass deflections. Numbers of his one-year deal have not been released as of now.
Usama Young had perhaps the best season of his career in 2012 for the Cleveland Browns, when he recorded 53 total tackles, seven pass deflections, three interceptions and 1.5 sack on just 11 games as a starter. Young is a former 3rd round pick by the New Orleans Saints in the 2007 draft out of Kent State and has also played occasionally as a cornerback in the NFL. He will be 28 years old on May and signed an undisclosed contract.
Defensive end Andre Carter, who will be 34 years old on May, will come back to his second year as a Raider after signing with the Silver & Black during the 2012 season. Following a torn left quadriceps tendon that ended his 2011 campaign prematurely, Carter came back to playing shape and recorded 19 total tackles, 2.5 sacks and 1 forced fumble on 12 games last year. He’s currently ranked as the 58th player in the NFL’s all-time sack list, with 78.5 career sacks, with a career-high of 12.5 for the 49ers in 2002. Carter signed an one-year deal.
Also returning for his second season as a member of the Silver & Black, after signing as a free agent in 2012, is cornerback Joselio Hanson. The 31-year-old, who will be 32 on August, appeared on all 16 games last year, mostly at his natural position of nickel corner, recording 61 total tackles, five pass deflections, two interceptions and one forced fumble. He agreed to an undisclosed contract.
Here are some other notes of the day regarding the Raiders:
CB Mike Jenkins also had strong interests from the Jacksonville Jaguars and the Buffalo Bills.
DT Tommy Kelly, who was recently cut by the Raiders, signed a two-year deal with the New England Patriots.
The Cincinnati Bengals considered a trade for former Raiders LB Rolando McClain before he was cut, but the parties could not reach an agreement.
QB Seneca Wallace will work out for the Raiders on Wednesday. The 32-year-old didn’t play in 2012 after being cut by the Browns prior to the start of the season.
Newly acquired QB Matt Flynn will have base salaries of $3.25 million in 2013 and $5 million in 2014.
Rutgers WR Tim Wright had a visit with the Raiders. Wright is 6’4, 220 and caught 39 passes for 449 yards and two TDs in 2012. He’s regarded as a late-round prospect.
The Raiders are also reportedly interested in Howard’s LB Keith Pough, along with several other teams. He’s considered to be a mid to late round prospect.
