The Oakland A's missing the playoffs again results in a fabulous annual consolation prize for Raider Nation. Effective this Sunday against the Houston Texans, the football field at Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum will no longer be smattered with that unsightly one-fourth acre of infield baseball dirt.
Paul Gutierrez of the Sacramento Bee broke the news, tweeting, "CONFIRMED - grass will be down at Coliseum, baseball infield dirt gone, for #Raiders vs. #Texans on Sunday."
This is such good news it makes me want to put hash marks on his hash tags.
The dirt, of course, is the baseball infield of the Raiders' roommates the Oakland A's. The A's have no more home games for the 2010 regular season.
The Raiders aren't the only NFL team to share their field with a pro baseball team, but they are the only ones who just don't do anything about having roughly a fifth of their grass field covered with powdery dirt for all of September or beyond. The Miami Dolphins now plant grass between Florida Marlins games, the Palm Beach Post reports.
So the good news is that the Raiders' home field will look beautiful again Sunday. The bad news, naturally, is that this game on the Raiders' home field is likely to be blacked-out locally and the beautiful grass field will not be shown on television in the Bay Area.
