From staff and wire reports
NFL commissioner Roger Goodell met with animal welfare officials inside NFL headquarters Friday in New York while demonstrators outside urged Goodell to suspend Michael Vick following his indictment on dogfighting charges.
"Sack Vick!" chanted the demonstrators, organized by People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, as they walked peacefully in front of the Park Avenue building.
Goodell met with officials from the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. The leaders of the demonstration focused on Goodell's one-year suspension of Tennessee's Adam "Pacman" Jones under the NFL's personal conduct policy, although Jones has not been convicted of any crime.
"We think they should do the same with Michael Vick," said PETA spokesman Dan Shannon.
ESPN reported that the Falcons, the NFL and the NFLPA would urge Vick to accept a one-year suspension. NFL senior vice president Joe Browne and NFLPA executive director Gene Upshaw disputed that report.
Briefly
Cowboys: Fullback Deon Anderson is the first of the team's eight draft picks to agree to terms on a contract. He'll receive a four-year deal. Anderson was a sixth-round pick out of UConn. The Cowboys are expected to sign the remaining draftees by the time training camp opens in San Antonio on Wednesday.
Titans: Adam "Pacman" Jones won't have to appear in court in Las Vegas until Oct. 29 to face charges in a strip club melee that preceded a triple shooting, authorities said. Justice of the Peace Tony Abbatangelo waived a scheduled Monday court date and set an October preliminary hearing.
Raiders: Oakland safety Jarrod Cooper was suspended for the first four regular-season games for using steroids.
