Former 49ers and Raiders wide receiver Jerry Rice and running back Emmitt Smith who starred with the Dallas Cowboys headline the preliminary list of modern-era nominees for induction next year in the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
The list released Saturday includes 131 players, coaches and contributors.
Hall of Fame selectors will chose 25 semifinalists by Nov. 27, and 15 finalists by Jan. 7.
Voting will take place Feb. 6, the day before the Super Bowl.
Other modern-era nominees include Raiders wide receiver Tim Brown, Herschel Walker, Cris Carter, Andre Reed and Sterling Sharp. Former commissioner Paul Tagliabue is also on the list.
They join two previously announced senior nominees, former Detroit Lions cornerback Dick LeBeau and former Detroit Broncos running back Floyd Little.
The Minnesota Vikings will play their first of 10 indoor games on today when they face the Detroit Lions at Ford Field. That figure could be as high as 11, if the retractable roof at the Arizona Cardinals' University of Phoenix Stadium is closed Dec. 6.
Brett Favre couldn't be happier. A quarterback once known for his success in the chill of winter and his lack of it in domed stadiums was a good fit for the Vikings, in part, because he has come to enjoy playing in a climate-controlled environment. Favre said he isn't sure what changed, adding: "I think I just wasn't very good in those games (early in my career). I was younger, but I don't know if that is a good enough excuse."
Redskins cornerback Fred Smoot has been downgraded to questionable for Washington's game today against the St. Louis Rams. Smoot first appeared on the injury report Friday as probable with a rib injury.
The San Diego Chargers have placed defensive tackle Jamal Williams on injured reserve with a triceps injury, meaning he'll miss the rest of the season.
It's a big loss. Although the 12-year veteran has a history of knee injuries, he's still been a force in the middle, particularly against the run.
