Time rushes by like Gale Sayers in the open field. At Hall of Fame time a lot of great players get left in the dust. The Eighties are fading far, far away in the rear view mirror of the NFL's wide open new game. Here are eight guys that Hall voters ought to look twice at. Enough quarterbacks and receivers already...
Chicago Bear defensive end Richard Dent. Super Bowl MVP. Five Time All Pro. Dominated in the Super Bowl Bears great Playoff run. Vicious pass rusher who also played the run quite well. Bounced around after leaving the Bears and picked up another Super Bowl Ring with San Francisco Forty Niners though he was injured early in the season. Better then the some of the defensive players that have recently gotten in ahead of him. 137 and a half sacks, eight INT's and a TD
Oakland Raider Cornerback Lester Hayes. Covered in Stick Em poised ready to bump and run with anyone. Just win baby. And he did. Two Super Bowls. All Decade Team of the 80's. Thirty nine Ints. Six time All pro. 1980 Defensive Player of the Year. What’s the hold up with Lester? Raider bias? Or too many Raiders already? Don't bump Lester because of that....
* New Orleans Saint outside linebacker Ricky Jackson. 136 sacks. Eight Ints. Six Pro Bowls. Never won a playoff game in Orleans but snatched a late career Super Bowl with the San Francisco Forty Niners. Part of a dominate group of Saint Linebacker along with potential Hall of Famer Sam Mills. Might be dividing the votes with his teammates and other OLB and DE's with Hall availability.
* Chicago Bear Outside Linebacker Wilbur Marshall. Well, he played for the Washington Redskins and others but he is always a Bear to me. Vicious, complete player. Forty five sacks, 23 Ints, three TD's one of them the memorable run in the snow as the Bears beat the Los Angles Rams in the NFC Championship Game. 1992 Defensive Players of the Year. Key Defensive player in the Bears and Redskin's Super Bowl run. Played great in big games. Dominated in the Redskins 1992 NFC Championship Game and excelled in their Super Bowl win. A mercenary player who finished his career with Buddy Ryan in a series of short stints with the Houston Oilers and Arizona Cardinals. Merciless hitter.
* A Hog Exacta which is why the voters might split. Russ Grimm and Joe Jacoby. Two great players on the Washington Redskins legendary Hogs offensive lines of the 80's. Paved the way for John Riggins. Allowed Timmy Smith to be a one game Super Bowl wonder by opening massive holes. Multiple Pro Bowlers who played against top competition the New York Giant Super Bowl Teams, the brutal Buddy Ryan Eagle Defenses, the famed Forty Niners, and beat the great Bears defense twice in the playoffs. The massive Jacoby always played well against the great Lawrence Taylor.
* Cleveland Brown Clay Matthews. Nineteen seasons. 278 Games. Sixty nine and a half sacks. 16 Ints. That's Hall caliber, correct? Consistent player who played in the third most games in NFL history.
* How about New York Giant Carl Banks. All Eighties. Played great in the Giants two Super Bowls. Great player who could play the run and pass but was overshadowed by LT. Harry Carson is also in so a Giant trifecta would be tough.
* Defensive End Chris Doleman. 150 sacks. Eight Ints. Eight Pro Bowls. All Decade for the 90's. 21 sack season.
That’s nine. My head hurts. No wonder the voters fight and get backed up.
Hey what about Robert Brazile before he gets senior committed....?
Say its seniors from the 70's...
Lee Roy Jordan is that you? Is that Andy Russell..... Howdy Chuck Howley...
