RUNOFF Ken Stabler v Ray Guy
By Patrick Patterson
With 1117 votes in for the Raider in the Hall of Fame project, there is a statistical tie for the top spot between Ray Guy and Ken Stabler. Stabler has a 1 vote lead over Guy which amounts to a .001% difference. So, rather than going to the Supreme Court for a recount, we are having a runoff where it will just be Guy v Stabler.
Ray Guy
Guy was a first round pick by the Oakland Raiders in 1972 who would go on to revolutionize the position of punter. He was part of three Raider world Championship teams, and had a pivotal play in SB XVIII where he was able to field a snap above his head and bring it down and still get the kick away.
Honors:
7 Time Pro Bowler
9 Time All Pro
Member of the NFL All-70s team
Member of the NFL 75th Anniversary all time team.
Knocks:
Guy was a punter, which is a position that is synonymous with failure in the NFL. Punters only come into the game when the offense has failed to advance the ball, and are therefore looked down on as a position.
Ken “The Snake” Stabler
One of the things that Hall voters seem to talk about is players having that defining moment. Stabler was involved in several games so memorable that they were given names by NFL Films. “The Immaculate Reception,” “The Sea of Hands,” “Ghost to the Post,” and “The Holy Roller” are all household manes and Stabler won three out of four (and SHOULD have won all four, but then it wouldn’t be a famous game.) Stabler was the king of fourth quarter comebacks long before Joe Montana or John Elway made the Hall on that reputation. Other teams were not happy with a late score if they left time for the Snake to work his magic
Honors:
3 Time All Pro
4 Time Pro Bowler
1974 NFL MVP
1976 Bert Bell Award Winner
Member of the NFL All-70s Team
Knocks:
Dr Z doesn’t like him for personal reasons. Stabler has more interceptions that touchdowns for his career, and his numbers steadily declined his last few years in the league.
Its down to two, which Raider Legend should the Raider Nation unite behind to send to Canton? They BOTH are way past due, but which should we give a collective voice to?
