As legendary Raiders head coach John Madden prepares to enter the Pro Football Hall of Fame in Canton, Ohio, on Saturday, August 5th, we present a look back at the 16 proud members of the Silver and Black who have previously earned such distinction. We continue with Raiders running back Eric Dickerson, who was enshrined in 1999.
Although Dickerson only played one year with the Raiders, he wore the Silver and Black with pride for the 1992 season. After an 11-year career, he was inducted into Pro Football Hall of Fame on August 7, 1999. Dickerson made six Pro Bowl appearances during his time in the NFL.
He began his NFL career as a first round pick, second selection overall, by the Los Angeles Rams in 1983. Dickerson also played for the Indianapolis Colts (1987-91) and the Atlanta Falcons (1993).
Dickerson played in all 16 regular season games and led the Raiders in rushing in 1992 with 729 yards on 187 carries, and scored two rushing touchdowns. He also caught 14 passes for 85 yards and a score.
Dickerson is considered one of the best college runners in NCAA history. He rushed for 4,450 yards in four seasons at SMU and holds NFL rookie-season records for most rushing attempts: 390; most yards rushing: 1,808; and most touchdowns rushing: 18.
During his NFL career, Dickerson set NFL records for rushing yards: 2,105; 100-yard rushing performances: 12; and combined yards from scrimmage: 2,244 in 1984. He ranks third in NFL history in career rushing yardage: 13,259. In 1987, he was traded from the Rams to the Colts in a blockbuster deal. The Raiders acquired Dickerson in a trade with Indianapolis in 1992. He was named NFL Player of the Year in 1984, and NFL Offensive Player of the Year 1986. Dickerson was also named All-Pro in 1983, 1984, 1986, 1987, and 1988.
