As legendary Raiders head coach John Madden prepares to enter the Pro Football Hall of Fame in Canton, Ohio, on Saturday, August 5th, we present a look back at the 16 proud members of the Silver and Black who have previously earned such distinction. We continue with Raiders cornerback Mike Haynes, who was enshrined in 1997.
Inducted into Pro Football Hall of Fame on July 26, 1997, CB Mike Haynes made nine Pro Bowl appearances during his career. He chalked up 46 career interceptions while playing with the Raiders and New England.Haynes totaled 688 yards in interception returns and returned two interceptions for touchdowns.
The Oakland Raiders have always featured stellar defensive backs. In 1983, the Raiders acquired CB Mike Haynes from the New England Patriots. Paired with CB Lester Hayes, the Raiders boasted two true "shut down" corners. Haynes abilities were showcased on the grandest stage in professional football as he helped the Raiders capture the franchise's third World Championship of Professional Football in his first year with the team.
Haynes, who tied for Raiders lead with three interceptions in 1988, played in 43 consecutive games with the Raiders before missing action mid-way through the 1986 season. He led the league in return yards in 1984 with 220 on six interception returns, including a then-team record return of 97 yards at Miami. He tallied 18 interceptions as a member of the Raiders. Haynes joined the Raiders in mid-season in 1983, and played in the final five league games plus three playoff wins, including Super Bowl XVIII. He helped the Raiders earn a victory over the Redskins in Super Bowl XVIII and picked off a pass in that game.
Haynes came to Raiders after playing out his option with Patriots in 1982, completing seven seasons with New England. He made 58 consecutive starts with with the Patriots from 1976-79 and was the Patriots top interceptor from 1976-78. He also finished as New England's all-time punt return leader with 1,159 yards on 111 returns, a 10.4 yard average. Haynes recorded two punt returns for touchdowns as rookie in 1976, with runs of 89 and 62 yards. He also blocked and returned a field goal attempt for 65-yard touchdown in 1980. He was the fifth player and first defensive back taken in the 1976 draft by New England.
Haynes earned AFC Rookie of Year honors and was named All-Pro in 1978, 82, 84 and 85 and All-Conference eight times. He was also named to NFL All-Time Team.
