So, my group and I spent about 4 hours Saturday night getting thoroughly
thrashed with an agent for one of the Raider players along with a couple of
the player's relatives. Interesting to hear some of the behind the scenes
takes on what's going on in Raiderland.
--The players loved Kiffin and hated to see him go. They view the
organization as in total disarray. The players also think that Kiffin did it
to himself, and were pissed at him for doing what he did.
--The agent thinks the biggest mistake the team made in recent years was
firing Mike Lombardi. He told me he never knows who's making the decisions
in the front office and it changes constantly, but the last stop is always
Al's desk.. He said Lombardi, who he says is a friend of his, was feeding
the media when it looked like he was gone.
--Last week Al sent a message to punter Shane Lechler through Tom Cable. He
said Lechler is gone after the season and wants out badly. Al asked that
Lechler come to his office to discuss an extension. Lechler declined the
invitation, and all week the Raiders had any punter they could dig up come
in the tryout, apparently to *send a message* to Lechler. He told me Lechler
and some of the others just laughed at the gesture, but it was just another
sign of just how childish the team has become.
