Team succumbs to locker room cancer
OAKLAND, CA -- The Oakland Raiders died of locker room cancer on Sunday following a battle with the disease that rapidly spread among the team after cornerback Charles Woodson was first diagnosed in November. The entire team succumbed at approximately 5:05 p.m. EST, less than an hour after the Raiders lost 27-7 at Pittsburgh.
"I was as distraught as anyone to learn that the team had contracted locker room cancer," said coach Bill Callahan. "But I was proud of the way they held their heads high and fought it. I can only trust now that they are in a better place."
The NFL announced it will help the Raiders rebuild their team by granting the team two extra draft picks in each round of the 2004 draft. Oakland will play the remainder of its 2003 schedule with a roster of free agents, with 50-percent of gate revenues going to support locker room and clubhouse cancer research.
