... when you were growing up (as in my case), what made you a fan of the Silver
& Black? For me, it was a couple of things. First, my favorite color was/is
black. Secondly, when I was 8, 9, 10 years old in the mid-70s, I used to watch
Oakland games on NBC, usually called by Curt Gowdy. I loved how dirty they
were on defense, led by the likes of Tatum, Atkinson, Sistrunk, Hendricks,
Villapiano, et al. On offense, The Snake was my favorite player in the NFL.
Every ball was a spiral. Loved the mammoth O-line... Upshaw, Lawrence, Dalby,
Shell. And Cliff, Freddy and Ghost rocked. What's not to love about that
team? Lastly, when you are a kid, you tend to lean towards cool logos. The
Raiders helmet logo was the coolest logo in the NFL when I was a kid, and it
still is to this day. Why do you think Tampa Bay stole it from us??? ;-)
So if you didn't grow up in Raider Country (Bay Area -or- L.A., depending on
your age), what exactly made you a Raider fan?

I grew up in a little town on the West Coast of British Columbia, and one of
the earliest memories i have, i was not quite 4 years old, was watching
Bobby Chandler and Kenny King running side by side down the side line (three
"sides" in one sentence, i'm good) for a touchdown against the Eagles in the
Superbowl, that was what made me a Raiderfan. And what sealed the deal, and
made my obsessive was a monday night game against the Chargers in 82 or 83,
the Raiders had the ball one SD's goaline and Don Meredith started making
noises like a get engine and Marcus went over the top for a TD, great stuff

Much of what you said is why I became a Raider fan at a very young age and
was never a fan of another team. I was born and raised in Ohio and since
there is no professional football team here I went with the Silver&Black.
My father was never that much into football and I found the love for the
game on my own. Back then the only way I could find the game was only if I
was lucky, this was even before Monday Night Football. Now I do not have
to wait for just the score on the 11:00 local news most Sundays like I did
way back then. First I got this Internet deal where I found this newsgroup
and the news that I would otherwise not know until it was 2 weeks old in my
local paper. Then I got my satellite dish where I can get all the Raider
games, that was good but I was missing out on the pre-season games so I went
ahead and paid a little extra to get LA's local television station where I
can also get the Silver&Black show.
Why I became a fan of the team. The never say die, play
hard aspect. Also that they were a band of miscasts from the other football
teams that would shine in the Silver&Black. That is happening now as it was
then. It took them until '76 to win the big game but every year you could
depend on the team putting it all out on the field, holding nothing back. I
respect that, it is the way it should be.

May sound silly but, Bo Jackson. And for a few different reasons. When I
was around 9 or 10 I got a nintendo game some may recall named Tecmo Bowl.
Who were the best running backs? Well, Bo Jackson and Marcus Allen. I
didn't really watch much TV at the time, but I was just beginning my
interest in football. Picking a team to watch was easy of course, because
now I knew the names of many players on the RAIDERS squad. I acquired my
love for the RAIDERS not long after I began learning more about the game,
and watching the human highlight reel known as Bo Jackson run over, around,
and through every opposing defense. Later in life along came Tecmo Super
Bowl, in which I guided Jay Schreoder, Marcus, Howie, and Bo to somewhere
around 75,309,308 Super Bowl Championships. By the time I hit high school,
obviously I was wholly converted to the Dark Side. This lead to such events
as me nearly putting a fist through the floor following a certain KC
overtime loss, to almost ripping my steering wheel off during a playoff loss
to the Ravens. (yes, unfortunatly I was driving at the time)

My favorite color has always been black. So when I first started watching
football I immediately liked the Raiders. No one else in my family watched
football, so I just kind of started watching on my own when I was about 12.
At first I liked the Raiders and Bengals. But it did not take long for me
to forget all about the Bengals. GO RAIDERS! Sherry

It was Super Bowl XVIII where Marcus Allen reversed his field and went
all the way to the end zone. Also, it was the days of Marc Wilson; when
people would complain about the Raiders, I would remain faithful. I
have always rooted for the underdog, and the Raiders have been there
more times than I want to imagine. But they have also won three
championships.

I am from southern WV, and I love the Raiders. I became a Raider fan in
the 70s.. Obviously the logo and the colors are attention getters. But
what really endured them to me in the beginning was their unmatched
desire to win. I would watch the games with my dad and they would get
soooooo penalized, but on the next play they would overcome that penalty
and on the next play get another penalty as if to say you can slow us
down, but you cant stop us. I loved their fighting attitude.
They are tame now compared to then. Once a Raider fan , always a Raider
fan.
So as far as I'm concerned they are my local team....rdr-fan.

Wow, great question, Dave! Born and raised in Oregon, we have no pro
football teams and my mom didn't care for sports at all. My dad loves all
sports, but really claims no football team as his favorite. The Raider logo
had a lot to do with it too, but my first memory of the Raiders was Lyle
Alzado. That sompregnant dog was the meanest, dirtiest looking man I'd ever seen.
That's when I started paying attention. The closest team was Seattle but
there was no way I was going to be a fan of a team with a seagull on their
helmet. The Whiners were never a consideration. The Oakland/L.A. Raiders
were larger than life. Alzado opened my eyes and I've been a fan now for
about two decades. My tenure may not be as formidable as some others', but
S&B still flows through the veins just as richly.
Thanks for asking, Dave!
