www.bayarea.comIt certainly has been an eventful year for Raiders cornerback Phillip
Buchanon:
THE GOOD
. An 83-yard interception return late in the fourth quarter gave the Raiders
a 20-13 lead against Cincinnati in a game they would win 23-20.
. A 78-yard punt return opened the scoring against the New York Jets in a
game the Raiders eventually led 21-10 (they lost 27-24 in overtime).
. A 64-yard interception return opened the scoring against Minnesota. The
Raiders won 28-18 to end a five-game losing streak.
. He leads the team with four interceptions and is tied for second in
touchdowns.
THE BAD
. That game-breaker against Cincinnati hid the fact that receivers covered
by him gained 150 yards in 11 catches.
. Against Kansas City on Oct. 20, he muffed a punt midway through the fourth
quarter. The Chiefs recovered at the Raiders' 11, scored to go up 17-3 and
won when the Raiders' last drive ended a yard shy of the end zone.
. He let Detroit fullback Cory Schlesinger run downfield alone and catch a
crucial second-half touchdown pass in the Lions' 23-13 victory.
. His huge punt return Sunday put the Raiders, trailing 24-21, at the
Chiefs' 26-yard line -- until he took off his helmet to taunt fans and
earned a 15-yard penalty. After the Raiders tied the score, they forced the
Chiefs into a fourth-and-14 -- whereupon Buchanon played so far off his man
that the Chiefs converted a 16-yard pass, called a timeout and kicked the
winning field goal.
