Raiders kicker Sebastian Janikowski will not be charged with any crimes in connection with a September scuffle at a Walnut Creek bar.
``There was insufficient evidence to charge him in the case,'' said Bruce Flynn, a deputy district attorney in the Contra Costa County district attorney's office.
The news will provide a welcome respite for the Raiders, who this week saw four players accused of using the banned steroid THG.
Although police had probable cause to arrest Janikowski that night, there was not enough evidence against him to prove the case in court, Flynn said. Flynn also said that the man whom Janikowski allegedly assaulted no longer wanted the case prosecuted.
Walnut Creek police took the football player into custody Sept. 20 on suspicion of misdemeanor assault, misdemeanor vandalism and public intoxication.
He and a woman were dining that Saturday night at Slates Supper Club. According to one of the club's owners, two men approached the couple's table and began saying things to Janikowski. He confronted the men but was stopped by the restaurant's doorman, who wrestled him to the ground.
Police said two people told them Janikowski had assaulted them and broken mirrors off nearby parked cars.
The Walnut Creek arrest was not Janikowski's first. He pleaded no contest last December to drunken driving after an arrest for speeding on Interstate 580.
