Former NFL famed punter Ray Guy is among 25 semi-finalists for induction into the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
Guy has made the list for several years, but has never been chosen for the final cut.
The Thomson resident, who is living in Mississippi while working to raise funds for the upcoming centennial celebration at Southern Mississippi University, is one of many former NFL stars nominated for the sport's most prestigious honor.
Guy, a famed punter with the Oakland Raiders and Los Angeles Raiders for 14 years, is regarded by many to be the greatest punter in NFL history.
In his name, a college football punter is named tops in America every year.
Guy's wife, Beverly, works with the McDuffie County Board of Education at Thomson High School.
The couple has two children, Ryan Guy, a physical education teacher at Harlem Middle School and Amber Guy, a college student.
The Guys own a home on the outskirts of Thomson.
Other former NFL greats nominated for the NFL Hall of Fame include: Emmitt Smith, the all-time leader rusher; Jerry Rice, all-time leading receiver; Paul Tagliabue, former NFL commissioner; Terrell Davis, former University of Georgia running back and two-time Super Bowl champion with the Denver Broncos; and Chris Doleman, a former star with the Atlanta Falcons.
Other nominees include the following former great NFL players: Cliff Branch, Tim Brown, Cris Carter, Don Coryell, Roger Craig, Dermonti Dawson, Richard Dent, Kevin Greene, Russ Grimm, Charles Haley, Art Modell, Shannon Sharpe, Steve Tasker and Aeneas Williams.
