Quarterback May Need Another Operation
BOSTON -- The New England Patriots are unhappy with quarterback Tom Brady's decision to have knee surgery in California, SportsCenter 5 has confirmed.
Since surgeons repaired his knee, he's undergone two more procedures to clean out an infection. If the situation is not brought under control, the Boston Herald reported that surgeons may need to redo the surgery -- delaying his rehabilitation.
The team is unhappy that Brady had the surgery 3,000 miles away from Boston and would have preferred that it was performed by the team doctor at Massachusetts General Hospital, SportsCenter 5's Mike Lynch reported.
"Any surgery has a risk. Any time you're implanting tissue that is not live or a foreign body into a joint or another part of your body there is always a risk of infection. It's the No. 1 concern for surgeons," Boston Celtics Team Physician Dr. Brian McKeon said. "An easy guess would be 0.8 percent to 1 percent of the time you can experience an infection with ACL surgery."
McKeon said that it is likely Brady's joint is infected and that the infection went down to where the ACL reconstruction took place.
"They jumped on this very early, and they've done an excellent job thus far, from what I've read, and if you jump on it early and do sequential washouts, as we call it, or clean out the knee, irrigate it out literally with high-powered fluid with antibiotics every other day or so for three or four consecutive surgeries often you can save the graft -- you have a very high chance of graft survival," McKeon said.
Brady, 31, suffered a torn ACL and MCL in the Pat's game against the Kansas City Chiefs on Sept. 7. The team's star was hit hard in the first quarter of the game when he was caught in the backfield by Chiefs safety Bernard Pollard.
Brady has won 78 percent of all his starts, the best record of any quarterback in the Super Bowl era. If his 14-3 playoff record is added in, his winning percentage jumps to 79 percent.
