www.journaltimes.comBy Gery Woelfel Forbes.com recently ranked the top general managers in sports, including those in the National Football League, National Basketball Association, National Hockey League and Major League baseball. The formula the Forbes' people used was basically this: a GM's performance vs. the performance of their predecessor and payroll relative to the league median when compared to their predecessor. The Forbes folks also factored in how successful each GM's team was and penalized each GM who cut costs and, in the process, hurt the team's winning percentage. Two GMs from the state made the list: -- Brewers general manager Doug Melvin came in at 70. -- Bucks general manager Larry Harris came in at 91. Forbes.com ranked 98 GMs and, in the upset of upsets, Detroit Lions GM Matt Millen didn't finish dead last. Shockingly, Millen ranked 96th, finishing just ahead of Mike Brown of the Cincinnati Bengals and Michael Lombardi of the Oakland Raiders. And where was Packers' GM Ted Thompson ranked? Well, because Forbes.com only ranked GMs with three years of service to their team, Thompson wasn't critiqued. But he will next year and my guess is that, unless he finds a running back as competent or better than Ahman Green, he'll be ranked right down there with Messrs. Millen, Brown and Lombardi.
