His game was as exciting as his name. WR Dokie Williams was known for his
explosive speed and his big game playmaking ability. A member of the Super
Bowl XVIII winning team, his presence on the field was a threat to
secondaries around the league. Williams played for the Raiders from 1983-87,
and helped establish some of the most prolific offenses in Raiders history.
We had a chance to catch up with Dokie for our Whatever Happened to...
series.
Q: When did you start playing football?
Dokie Williams: The first time I started playing football I was10 years old.
It was in a Pop Warner league. I had actually made the team a year earlier,
but my mom didn't let me play.
Q: How did you become a Raider?
Dokie Williams: I was drafted in the 5th round by the Raiders out of UCLA. I
had no clue that they Raiders were going to pick me. I was playing
basketball at the time, and to be honest, I didn't think I would get drafted
in either sport. I really had no idea what I was going to do after school. I
didn't find out that I was drafted until I got home later on that night.
Q: What did it mean for you to play for the Raiders?
Dokie Williams: Oh, it meant everything. It was a true blessing being
selected and to play for the Raiders. The players I played with were so
incredible, man. I grew up a Raider fan in Ocean Side, Calif., and I just
couldn't believe that I was able to play for them.
Q: Is there any one moment or play that stand out from your career?
Dokie Williams: Not really. Well yeah, the Super Bowl was incredible. Being
on the field while the clock was winding down. Being on the field with all
my teammates and all those veteran players. It truly is an amazing feeling.
Q: Do you keep in contact with any of your former teammates?
Dokie Williams: I do. I see a lot of guys at golf tournaments and charity
events. It's hard to see each other as often as we would like because we all
have our different schedules. I actually just got off the golf course with
Sam Seale.
Q: Which team did you enjoy playing against the most?
Dokie Williams: To be honest, the whole AFC West. It didn't matter who we
played from the West, it was always fun, and it was always hard. Tthere was
something about playing Seattle . They would always beat us up there, but
when we went in with Bo [Jackson], that changed everything for both teams.
Q: Do you still attend any Raider games?
Dokie Williams: I have not been to Raider game since they've been back in
Oakland. I go to the games every year when they come down and play the
Chargers. I've been planning on coming up to Oakland for years now, but I
haven't gotten a chance yet. Hopefully soon.
Q: What are you doing now?
Dokie Williams: I am a Mortgage Broker for American Mortgage. It's going
absolutely great. I've been doing it for about three years now. Before that
I used to be a High School world history teacher.
Q: Are there any messages you would like to pass along to the Raider fans?
Dokie Williams: Watch out for the Silver and Black. They look good this
year!
