With Super Bowl appearances in four different decades, the list of Raider
legends and former great players is endless. Now, how's this for legend; two
Super Bowl Titles, second all-time on the Raiders in scoring, first in field
goals made, and countless game-winning kicks. Former Raiders kicker Chris
Bahr (1980-88) is one legend who will forever go down as one of the Raiders
all-time greats.
We had a chance to catch up with Chris for our Whatever Happened to...
series.
Q: When did you start playing football?
Chris Bahr: You mean kicking? I started kicking in the 10 th grade. I was at
a park with a buddy, whose dad was a football coach. We were kicking just
for fun and the dad saw me and we went from there.
Q: How did you become a Raider?
Chris Bahr: I was actually picked up off of waivers. When I originally was
drafted, I thought that the Raiders would select me, but it didn't turn out
that way. The Bengals drafted me and I played a few years there before the
Raiders finally got me. I was meant to be a Raider.
Q: Why did you think the Raiders were going to draft you?
Chris Bahr: It was right around the end of George Blanda's career, and I had
heard that the Raiders were interested in me. Actually, everyone at that
time entering the draft thought that they would be drafted by the Raiders
because that was the team that everyone wanted to play for.
Q: What did it mean for you to wear the Silver and Black?
Chris Bahr: Well, considering that the Bengals had gone 4-12 my last two
years with them, and to end up being a two-time Super Bowl Champion with the
Raiders, it was just incredible. Living in the Bay Area and being able to
play for a team with such a legacy; the mystique, the attitude; I've always
considered myself a Raider, and it and fit perfect for me.
Q: What is your greatest memory from playing with the Raiders?
Chris Bahr: Oh man...All the guys. The players I met, everyone who played
with me and before me. Being in the locker room with them. I don't get to
see them very much, but when we get together at charity events and things
like that, it feels like we were all together playing just yesterday.
Q: Is there any one moment or play that stands out from your career?
Chris Bahr: Obviously there were a lot. If I had to say one game that stood
out, it would probably be the1980 AFC Championship game against San Diego .
Sure, there was the Super Bowls, and those were great, but there was just
something about that San Diego game that really stands out. The game was in
San Diego and it had rained early in the week, which it never does down
there. It was overcast and muddy, the whether and field condition just fit
what we were all about.
Q: Do you keep in contact with any of your former teammates?
Chris Bahr: Once and a while. I talk to Plunkett when I come to the Bay. Rod
Martin and I talk every so often. I hear from Hendricks. I don't keep up
with everyone as much as I would like to. I mainly see everyone when I
attend charity events or something.
Q: Did you have any nickname while you played?
Chris Bahr: Not really. Well...They used to call me Sig, but I'm not giving
details. I got it at training camp one year, but that's all I'll say about
that.
Q: Do you remember who gave you the nickname?
Chris Bahr: I don't remember. It was probably Hendricks. He had a nickname
for everyone.
Q: Do you still attend any Raider games?
Chris Bahr: I haven't gotten a chance in a long time. Actually, let's see.
The last game I attend was the AFC Championship game against Buffalo when we
got crushed. Yeah, I left that game early to go watch my brother play with
the Giants instead. The Raiders are my son's favorite team, so we watch a
lot Raider games on T.V.
Q: What are you doing now?
Chris Bahr: I do financial consulting for a company called BroVest
Management. We do consulting for many different types of people. We have
several pro-players as clients as well.
Q: Are there any messages you would like to pass along to the Raider fans?
Chris Bahr: Keep the faith; they'll be back!
